Google Pixel 4 May Not Feature Fingerprint Scanner, Instead it Will Rely on Face Unlock

After releasing the first look of the Pixel 4, Google has now published a new YouTube video and a blog post confirming that the Pixel 4 will offer secured Face Unlock feature. This essentially means that the upcoming Pixel 4 may not feature a fingerprint scanner which might irk some users out there. But yes, the Pixel 4 will have a lot of sensors like the Apple iPhone X and XS series for enhanced security. The renders of Google Pixel 4 phones also suggested that there won’t be a fingerprint scanner at the back like the Pixel 3 series, however, everyone expected that the phones would offer in-display fingerprint scanners like modern-day smartphones. Nevertheless, Google is yet to confirm the absence of fingerprint scanner on Pixel 4 series, but the secure Face Unlock system hints at the removal of the much-loved feature. Alongside that, Google also teased the presence of ‘Motion Sense’ which will work with Project Soli chip.

Google Pixel 4: New Features Teased Officially

Talking more about the Pixel 4 devices, Google is adding a Project Soli chip which offers Motion Sense features allowing users to control their smartphone using gestures. This is something similar to what Xiaomi is testing with MIUI recently and the Chinese company is terming it as ‘Air Gestures.’ It’ll be interesting to see how Motion Sense gestures from Google work in real life when the phone comes out. Using Motion Sense, users will be able to change music tracks, silence phone calls, snooze alarms and so on, as shown by Google in its product video. And yes, Motion Sense will only be limited to select countries.

Another feature which Google teased is the presence of a secure face unlock system. Apple introduced Face Unlock feature a couple of years ago with the iPhone X, ditching Touch ID. Initially, the move from Apple was criticised by a lot of people, however, everyone liked the convenience of the feature as it aged. Now, Google seems to be following the footsteps of Apple as it’s integrating a secure face unlock system to the Pixel 4 series. In the teaser video, Google confirmed that the face unlock on Pixel 4 devices will work on any orientation and the data will be stored in a secure chip.

This is the reason why the Pixel 4 series will have a huge forehead, unlike the 2019 flagship phones. If Google manages to deliver what it showed in the teaser video with the Pixel 4 phones, it will be a great deal for the search giant. And yes, the Pixel 4 phones will not feature a secondary wide-angle selfie camera like their predecessors.

Google Pixel 4 Series: What We Know So Far

Last month, when the first render of the Pixel 4 XL came out, Google surprised everyone by releasing an official first look of the phone, months ahead of the launch. The Pixel 4 and Pixel 4 XL will likely come with dual rear cameras along with a Time of Flight (ToF) sensor, while on the front, we will see a single shooter for selfies and video calls. The design of the Pixel 4 phones will be pretty much 2018, but that’s acceptable if the company promises to deliver something better than others.

The Google Pixel 4 and Pixel 4 XL will come with up to 6GB of RAM and Snapdragon 855 chipset alongside big batteries this time around. The launch date of the phones are not known yet, but hey, we might not see them coming anytime before October.
